88 Films to Release Outrageous Korean Serial Killer Thriller, ‘Gifted’

Published

88 Films, the UK distribution company that I absolutely adore, recently announced a May 28th release of Gifted. From director Jai-hong Juhn and released in 2014, Gifted is part of the Korean new wave cinema splash that includes films such Oldboy, I Saw the Devil and the Vengeance Trilogy. While the film isn’t as popular as some of those other Korean titles, I’ve yet to see it, it does sound just as intriguing.

Per the 88 Films press release, this is a film about “a man with serious psycho-sexual repression who, after being laid off from his job, lets his innermost feelings explode and goes on a rampage of bloodlust and body parts! Featuring the tense and carefully presented psychological horror that made such classics as Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and Seven so timeless, but offering a unique South Korean spin on a well-worn formula, Gifted is not easily forgotten after the end credits roll. Following in the footsteps of the 88 Films release of Sea Fog, this is the label’s second effort in bringing UK audiences the bloodiest and best of genre-nightmares from the land of Cass beer and Kimchi.”

Yeah, you can sign me up for that.

The 88 Films Blu-ray will mark the worldwide debut of the film in HD and is the perfect addition to any genre fan’s collection. You can pre-order your copy today directly from 88 Films.

‘Hokum’ Heads Home to Digital Tomorrow Ahead of Physical Media Release in August

Hokum Review - Hokum Digital Release Date

After scaring up a strong theatrical run, Oddity director Damian McCarthy’s Hokum heads home to Digital this week.

Settle in for a spooky supernatural chiller as Hokum arrives on all Digital platforms to rent or own beginning June 2, followed by a Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD Combo and DVD release on August 11, 2026.

Adam Scott (“Severance”) stars in Hokum as reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman. When he retreats to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, the staff’s tales of an ancient witch haunting the honeymoon suite take hold of his mind. Disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance draw Ohm into a nightmarish confrontation with the darkest corners of his past.

Peter Coonan (“The Alienist: Angel of Darkness”), David Wilmot (“Station Eleven”), Florence Ordesh (“Departure”), Michael Patric (“Frontier”), Will O’Connell (“Game of Thrones”), Brendan Conroy (“Bodkin”), and Austin Amelio (“The Walking Dead”) also star.

Get a peek at the upcoming physical media release below, including a few special features.

Spooky Pictures’ Roy Lee (Weapons) & Steven Schneider (Insidious) produce alongside Image Nation’s Derek Dauchy (Late Night with the Devil), Tailored Film’s Ruth Treacy, Julianne Forde, & Mairtín de Barra, and Cweature Features’ Ken Kao & Josh Rosenbaum.

I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “A quaint Irish hotel with a deeply haunted history awaits an American writer in McCarthy’s third outing, continuing his streak for folkloric tales of supernatural karma and spine-tingling terror with a dark sense of humor.”

What’s next from Damian McCarthy? He’s currently writing a haunted house movie, but recent comments suggest he may be moving into other genres beyond that upcoming project.
