It looks like we’re finally getting the HD release we’ve been waiting for.
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment just brought Predator to 4K Ultra HD this week, available in a three pack with Predator 2 and Predators or all by itself. As many fans noticed, the most recent Blu-ray release of Predator was *awful*, with all the film grain scrubbed out to the point that everything on screen, including the characters, looked waxy and cartoon-like.
Thankfully, 4K Collective informs us that the 4K Ultra HD release fixes that mess, FINALLY presenting the classic action-horror film in HD proper. To that we say, hallelujah!
They inform, “Digital noise reduction has gone and it appears a teal filter was on the blu Ray release but has now gone. Looks more cinematic and back to the original colour timing.”
Long story short, “digital noise reduction” is a technique of removing image noise from a video signal by applying a digital comb filter, giving films an unnatural look for their HD releases. A proper high-def release, of course, is one that *doesn’t* scrub out the film grain, but rather makes the film look as close as possible to the way it did when originally shown in theaters.
Thanks for righting this wrong, Fox! Better late than never.
