Ari Aster’s ‘Midsommar’ is Now Streaming in 4K!

Published

on

Whether you’re a fan or not, Ari Aster‘s films look outstanding, with the Hereditary director’s Midsommar taking the horror outside.

Sun-soaked horror is typically the kiss of death, yet Aster’s Midsommar flexed hard, showing why this confident young filmmaker is going to become a titan in the industry.

Taking inspiration from The Wicker Man, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and even Hostel, this cult-themed dramatic quasi-slasher plays out like a fairytale in which a young girl (Florence Pugh) finds her escape/happiness in rural Sweden.

The landscape mixed with the cinematography is beautiful, while the costume and set design were Oscar-worthy (snub, snub, snub?). This is why I was crushed when Midsommar was released solely on Blu-ray and DVD.

Thankfully, this was a short term blemish.

A24 has updated several streaming files for Midsommar, offering up Aster’s second masterpiece in 4K UHD on Amazon, as well as Apple TV/iTunes and FandangoNow, Bloody Disgusting first uncovered. To say the film looks remarkable is an understatement – this is straight-up must-see material.

The only outlier to this news is that, after a huge undertaking, we confirmed that the extended Director’s Cut is not presented in 4K. It’s still a single file, without any chapters, dropped lazily into the iTunes extra features (which are a nightmare to access). I guess we’re lucky to even have it at all?

No matter, I implore you to do whatever it takes to see Midsommar in 4K.

GOOD MANNERS blu-ray

One of contemporary horror’s best werewolf movies is 2017’s Good Manners, and it’s finally set to receive a proper physical media release.

Icarus Films is partnering with OCN Distribution to unleash a new Blu-ray that’s now available to preorder via Vinegar Syndrome. and with a limited edition slipcover.

Set in São Paulo, the film follows Clara, a lonely nurse from the outskirts of the city who is hired by mysterious and wealthy Ana to be the nanny of her soon to be born child. Against all odds, the two women develop a strong bond. But a fateful night marked by a full moon changes their plans.

Good Manners is the second collaboration between filmmakers Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra, who write and direct. Zama’s Rui Poças‘ cinematography captures this unique werewolf tale described as “Disney meets Jacques Tourneur.”

Our own Trace Thurman wrote in his review, “With Good Manners, Rojas and Dutro have made one of the best werewolf movies ever made. That they are able juggle commentaries on racism and classism while still managing to tell two deeply affecting love stories is remarkable.”

BONUS FEATURES:

  • Commentary from film critics Shelagh Rowan-Legg and Carolyn Mauricette
  • 12-page booklet with an essay by film critic Nicolas Pedrero-Setzer
