‘Juan of the Dead,’ ‘Killer Barbys’ 4K Restorations to Debut on Film Movement Plus

Published

on

New 4K restorations of Juan of the Dead and Killer Barbys will debut exclusively on the streaming service Film Movement Plus, also available through Prime Video.

Juan of the Dead (known in Spanish as Juan de los Muertos) will stream on April 11.

The 2011 Spanish-Cuban zombie comedy is written and directed by Alejandro Brugués (Nightmare Cinema). Alexis Díaz de Villegas, Eliécer Ramírez, Andros Perrugorría, Jorge Molina Enríquez, Jazz Vilá, Andrea Duro, and Antonio Dechent star.

When Havana falls prey to a full-blown zombie invasion, slacker Juan and his friend Lorenzo decide to profit from the crisis and set up a zombie eradication business. Before long, Juan finds himself in the money — as well as in the unfamiliar role of local hero — as he and his partner expand their ever-expanding repertoire of inventive ways to kill zombies.

Killer Barbys (also known as The Killer Barbies) will stream on April 18.

The 1996 Spanish horror film is directed by Jess Franco (Vampyros Lesbos) from a script he co-wrote with Patxi Irigoyen. Santiago Segura, Aldo Sambrell, Mariangela Giordano, Silvia Superstar, and Charlie S. Chaplin star.

A vanload of kids are stranded in a creepy hilltop castle and become the unwitting victims of an immortal, sex-crazed countess who retains her youth by feeding upon the blood of the young. The guests are members of the gore-punk band the Killer Barbies, who prove themselves quite well equipped to battle the horrors that confront them.

Hopefully physical 4K UHD releases will follow.

‘Hokum’ Heads Home to Digital Tomorrow Ahead of Physical Media Release in August

Hokum Review - Hokum Digital Release Date

After scaring up a strong theatrical run, Oddity director Damian McCarthy’s Hokum heads home to Digital this week.

Settle in for a spooky supernatural chiller as Hokum arrives on all Digital platforms to rent or own beginning June 2, followed by a Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD Combo and DVD release on August 11, 2026.

Adam Scott (“Severance”) stars in Hokum as reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman. When he retreats to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, the staff’s tales of an ancient witch haunting the honeymoon suite take hold of his mind. Disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance draw Ohm into a nightmarish confrontation with the darkest corners of his past.

Peter Coonan (“The Alienist: Angel of Darkness”), David Wilmot (“Station Eleven”), Florence Ordesh (“Departure”), Michael Patric (“Frontier”), Will O’Connell (“Game of Thrones”), Brendan Conroy (“Bodkin”), and Austin Amelio (“The Walking Dead”) also star.

Get a peek at the upcoming physical media release below, including a few special features.

Spooky Pictures’ Roy Lee (Weapons) & Steven Schneider (Insidious) produce alongside Image Nation’s Derek Dauchy (Late Night with the Devil), Tailored Film’s Ruth Treacy, Julianne Forde, & Mairtín de Barra, and Cweature Features’ Ken Kao & Josh Rosenbaum.

I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “A quaint Irish hotel with a deeply haunted history awaits an American writer in McCarthy’s third outing, continuing his streak for folkloric tales of supernatural karma and spine-tingling terror with a dark sense of humor.”

What’s next from Damian McCarthy? He’s currently writing a haunted house movie, but recent comments suggest he may be moving into other genres beyond that upcoming project.
