Months of Free Content Headed to ‘Doom’

At Bethesda’s pre-E3 conference last night, we caught a glimpse at the company’s plans for the future of Doom. As expected, the support is focused exclusively on fostering an active community around the game’s multiplayer experience and SnapMap creation tool, with each of them getting months of free content updates.

In July, fans of the Doom multiplayer can look forward to trying two new game types, including a one-flag CTF mode called Exodus, and a multi-zone variant of King of the Hill called Sector. Three more free-for-all modes will follow later in the summer, all of them free-of-charge.

On the paid DLC front, next month will see the arrival of the awkwardly named ‘Unto the Evil’ pack and its premium contents, featuring three multiplayer maps (Offering, Cataclysm, Ritual), a playable Harvester demon, the new UAC EMG Pistol, Kinetic Mine, hack modules, and more ways to personalize the look of your marine.

The focus at id Software is to continue growing the capabilities of SnapMap, rather than contribute single-player content directly. In the coming months, this content will further explore the potential of the toolset with new construction modules, visual themes, props, weapons, items, logic options, and improvements to the existing functionality that’ll make it much easier for modders and aspiring designers to create new content for solo or cooperative play.

As a special E3 bonus, the first level of Doom will be available to play, in its entirety, for this week only. If you’re still on the fence about it, it’s time to hop off.
