This year’s SXSW Film Festival is mixing old and new with their Midnighters program, which includes two hot horror hits.

The Natalie Erika James-directed Australian horror Relic, pictured above, made its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this past January where Meagan Navarro called it a “bone-chilling and devastating depiction of dementia.” Read her rave review right here.

In the film, “When Edna (Robin Nevyn), the elderly and widowed matriarch of the family, goes missing, her daughter Kay (Emily Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) travel to their remote family home to find her. Soon after her return, they start to discover a sinister presence haunting the house and taking control of Edna.”

Also making its way to the Austin-based film festival this March is The Vigil, an indie introduction to filmmaker Keith Thomas, who will be helming a remake of Firestarter for Blumhouse.

Joe Lipsett reviewed The Vigil out of its premiere in TIFF’s Midnight Madness program, a film in which a man providing overnight watch to a deceased member of his former Orthodox Jewish community finds himself opposite a malevolent entity.

In his review, Lipsett wrote that The Vigil is “a fresh take on the religious/demon possession horror film” that “feels like a breath of fresh air.“

SXSW runs from March 13-22, 2020 in Austin, Texas.
