Rob Zombie’s ’31’ Slashes Into Theaters This Fall!

Published

on

When reports of Alchemy having financial issues arose, there was immense nervousness amongst us horror fans as to what that would mean for Rob Zombie’s Halloween-themed slasher, 31 (read our review), which the distributor had acquired prior to the film’s World Premiere at this past January’s Sundance Film Festival.

We can all breathe easy as Saban Films has come to the rescue. The new distributor has acquired North American rights to 31, and plans to release it in limited theaters on September 16th (this probably means we can expect a VOD release around the same date).

31, which stars Sheri Moon Zombie (The Devil’s Rejects, Halloween), Golden Globe Nominee Malcolm McDowell (“Mozart in the Jungle,” A Clockwork Orange), Jeff Daniel Phillips (The Lords of Salem) and Meg Foster (The Lords of Salem), follows five carnival workers who are kidnapped and held hostage in an abandoned, Hell-like compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns.

Zombie is a genre titan, having brought his fans all sorts of insane horror films from House of 1,000 Corpses to The Devil’s Rejects, Halloween and its sequel, as well as The Lords of Salem. Out of all of them, this looks to be the most brutal…

31 is a treat not just to horror fans, but fans of true auteur filmmaking,” said Saban Films President Bill Bromiley. “The filmis executed in true stylistic Zombie fashion. Rob is an unrivaled talent, and we are thrilled to bring his bold new film to audiences across the continent.”

“After meeting with Saban, it was obvious that this was the perfect home for 31,” said Rob Zombie. “They have a true understanding of the genre and how to handle it. I am very excited to work with them.”

Paul Dano Joins Parker Finn’s ‘Possession’ Remake

Paul Dano in The Batman

Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 psychological horror movie Possession is getting a remake from Smile writer/director Parker Finn, and Deadline reports that The Batman actor Paul Dano has joined the cast.

No word at this time on character details, though.

The original film starred Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill as a married couple in Cold War-era West Berlin whose relationship spirals into a supernatural nightmare. In Finn’s update, Margaret Qualley and Callum Turner will star as the turbulent couple in Finn’s Possession, and Adjani has officially given her blessing on Qualley’s casting.

Parker Finn is writing and directing the new take on Possession.

He’s also producing alongside Jonathan Fass via Bad Feeling, along with Roy Lee and Andrew Childs via Vertigo, and Robert Pattinson. Marc Bienstock is serving as exec producer.

Our own Brian Keiper celebrated Possession‘s 40th anniversary here on BD back in 2021, writing: “Few movies depict emotional turmoil as effectively and daringly as Andrzej Zulawksi’s Possession. It is a challenging and sometimes inscrutable film, both for the mind and the emotions. Zulawski struggles through a number of deep issues throughout the course of the film; issues that speak to some of humanity’s deepest pains and fears. In many ways it is about loss— loss of political ideals, loss of faith, and loss of innocence. But most of all, Possession is about the fear, pain, and anger that comes from the loss of a marriage.”

This will mark Dano’s first horror role. The actor previously appeared in sci-fi hits Looper and Okja.
