Look, I know that today is Mother’s Day, so many people were probably expecting today’s discussion post to be something in line with that holiday. However, I already did that two years ago and until some new horror moms come around or I think of a new twist to add to that avenue, I’m gonna go on a different route today, alright? Plus, yesterday’s news that Shane Black’s The Predator got me excited for a new film about one of the universe’s most lethal hunter.
So let’s talk about horror movies where the protagonists have to survive against their hunters, where every action they take can be the difference between life and death. Hell, even the snapping of a twig by accidentally stepping on it could be enough to see your favorite character get torn limb from limb.
I’ve got a few of my favorites below and then I want you to tell me some of yours in the comments!
Dog Soldiers
Neil Marshall’s werewolf-against-British Army soldiers is thrilling, exciting, and, at times, wickedly funny. It’s got all the earmarks of a great survival horror, where the protagonists are seemingly completely outmatched by their pursuers and have to rely upon teamwork, ingenuity, and tactics in order to emerge victorious.
The Descent
Yes, another Neil Marshall movie. You know why? Because he’s awesome at making these kinds of movies, that’s why!
The Descent is a bonafide classic when it comes to horror. It features great characters, a snappy and tight story that gives a lot of emotional weight, and it’s not afraid to tackle not only the horror of the situation but also the horror of humanity when faced with desperate times. There aren’t many horror films that leave such an impact on viewers when it’s over.
Predator
Okay, so I realize that the whole reason I whipped up this piece is because I’m excited about Shane Black’s upcoming fourth entry in this franchise but that doesn’t mean I’m going to leave this masterpiece off the list. What better example of man against seemingly insurmountable death is there? I mean, c’mon… this movie is practically perfection.
