Enter the World of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ in VR!
Virtual reality has been making a huge comeback over the past few years. What was once a plot device for sci-fi/horror movies in the early 90’s and a rather embarrassing video game console (I’m looking at you, Virtual Boy) has now become a serious endeavor for several companies, all of whom are vying to be the top of the line when it comes to this hardware. And while no clear winner has emerged, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a swath of products being created for the platform.
Take, for example, Claire Hentschker’s “…audio-visual experiment for VR” that takes the physical space found in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining. The below video uses photogrammtery which allows for, “… 3D elements [to be] extracted and extruded from the original film stills, and the subsequent fragments are stitched together and viewed along the original camera path.”
While the video is clearly meant for those who have some sort of VR hardware, those who don’t can still watch the video and use their mouse to drag the video around in a 360˚ environment. Now, you can’t zoom in and out and navigate through the environments of free will. Additionally, it’s not 100% perfect but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s damn impressive.
Another cool little tidbit is that the music is, according to Claire, “…a stretched and edited version of the original score.”

Brendan Fraser is back for the upcoming fourth installment in The Mummy franchise from directors Radio Silence, and Michael Johnston (Obsession) is now in talks to join him.
The Hollywood Reporter lets us know tonight that Michael Johnston is in “early talks” to join The Mummy 4, which will release in theaters on October 15, 2027 via Universal.
Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah will reprise their iconic roles as Rick O’Connell, Evelyn O’Connell, and Jonathan Carnahan in the upcoming movie.
Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not, Scream 5-6) are directing from a script by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill).
Plot details are being kept under wraps at this time, but the brand new sequel is expected to disregard the events of the third movie, in which Rachel Weisz did not appear.
“It’s just really beautiful and scary and sweeping, and it’s awesome,” Gillet teases. Bettinelli-Olpin adds that the film “has all of the heart and the character that you could hope for.”
A remake of the classic Universal monster movie that took an action-adventure approach, The Mummy was released in 1999 and grossed $417 million worldwide. It was followed by The Mummy Returns in 2001 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008.
