A new TV spot for the upcoming Ghostbusters has been released and…I can’t defend the movie anymore. Is it cool that Stay Puft is making an appearance? I guess so, even though he looks like a deflating parade balloon. But in the span of 30 seconds they go from a boob joke to the “shoot it in the dick” gag. I’m sorry but that’s it. I’m done. I went from being genuinely excited for this movie to not caring whatsoever.
Look, the original Ghostbusters had clever humor, most of which was very dry and, in a way, cynical. There really wasn’t any physical gag humor. Even when Slimer “slimed” Venkman, the joke isn’t that he’s covered in the goop, the joke is Stantz’s reaction and how excited he is while simultaneously not caring that his friend and colleague just went through a terrifying experience. His scientific curiosity outweighed his empathy, which is what made the scene so silly! But this clip from the new film? It’s…it’s just bad.
The film, which comes out July 15th, 2016, stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. Director Paul Feig has filmed cameos (in new roles) for many of the original Ghostbusters cast on top of Aykroyd, including Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and even Sigourney Weaver.
Andy Garcia, Michael Kenneth Williams, Matt Walsh, Neil Casey, and Pat Kiernan also star alongside Chris Hemsworth.
“SNL” vet Neil Casey is the main Ghostbusters villain, Rowan, and was described as a convicted murderer who turns into a ghost after his execution is hit by a supercharged electrical storm. This gives him the power to raise an army of other ghosts, which could be made up of famous villains throughout history.
