I think we can all agree that Universal Pictures’ Ouija was pretty terrible – but it was a huge box office success. With big money comes instant sequels, which typically follows in form and doesn’t offer much in substance.
Mike Flanagan, who has already impressed the hell out of me with his underrated Oculus as well as the frightening Netflix movie Hush, is behind Ouija: Origin of Evil, which takes the franchise is a completely different direction. And it looks awesome.
The sequel takes place in 1965 Los Angeles where a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. The youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, forcing this small family to confront unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.
The trailer is jam-packed with “what the fuck” moments that are quite impressive. The last time I saw a trailer that packed this much punch it was James Wan’s The Conjuring. I’m not saying the two are alike in any way, shape or form, but it’s a good sign when there’s more than one solid trailer “moment” for the stupid to share, especially this early.

Annalise Basso, Parker Mack (Divergent), Sam Anderson, Kate Siegel (Oculus), Doug Jones (Hellboy), Elizabeth Reaser, Henry Thomas, and Lulu Wilson star in the film, which comes from Universal Pictures, Platinum Dunes, Blumhouse Productions and Hasbro.
