In 2006, Guillermo del Toro brought us Pan’s Labyrinth, a fantasy horror film that was rooted deeply in the drama genre. Telling the tale of Ofelia, a young girl who moves with her mother to her new stepfather’s army post after Spain’s civil war and retreats into her own imagination to avoid the horrors of the world around her, the film garnered near universal acclaim and became an instant classic, a film that will live well beyond its years, impacting and affecting all who see it.
On top of being a stunning piece of cinema, the movie is also, in my opinion, incredibly important as a piece of history. That’s why I’m thrilled to see del Toro announce that there will be a Criterion edition coming to home video this fall. No exact date has been set but I’m sure we’ll hear more about it as that time of the year draws closer.
Pan’s Labyrinth starred Ivana Baquero, Sergi López, Maribel Verdú, and Doug Jones.
Street date for Pan's Labyrinth on Criterion will be this Fall. But we will have some nice things at the LACMA exhibit.
