FUNimation has locked down the distribution rights for Toho’s Godzilla: Resurgence, according to SciFiJapan. This deal includes releasing the film in theaters, on home video, VOD, and broadcasting rights in North, Central, and South America. A late 2016 theatrical release is planned in the United States.
FUNimation, while primarily known for anime, has worked with live-action releases in the past, such as Attack on Titan and Rurouni Kenshin.
“An unknown accident occurs in Tokyo Bay’s Aqua Line, which causes an emergency cabinet to assemble. All of the sudden, a giant creature immediately appears, destroying town after town with its landing reaching the capital. This mysterious giant monster is named “Godzilla”.”
Godzilla: Resurgence, the 29th Toho entry in the franchise, will be hitting theaters in Japan on July 29th. It is co-directed by Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan). Anno has written the script.
The cast includes Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, Satomi Ishihara, Rando Yaguchi, and Ren Osugi.
