Sony’s ‘Flatliners’ Isn’t a Remake, It’s a Sequel

Published

on

We’ve been reporting that Sony’s upcoming take on Flatliners was a remake, a brand new take on the original 1990 film. However, it turns out that this isn’t the case as word comes directly from Kiefer Sutherland, who starred in the original, that the film is, in fact, a sequel.

I play a professor at the medical university. It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I’m the same character I was in the original ‘Flatliners’ but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film,” Sutherland tells Metro.

Sutherland played Nelson Wright in the original film, a medical student who wanted to see what the afterlife held by allowing himself, and his partners, to be killed only to be resuscitated minutes afterwards.

I loved making the first film and when I was asked if I would be interested in taking part in this, it didn’t take more than a minute to say yes,” Sutherland excitedly tells the site.

The sequel will star James Norton, Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, Ellen Page and Kiersey Clemons and is being directed by Niels Arden Oplev.

Flatliners comes out August 18th, 2017.

The Devil's Mouth trailer

Paradise turns deadly in the new trailer for The Devil’s Mouth, trapping a group of friends with summer’s deadliest movie monster: sharks.

The Devil’s Mouth debuts globally on Prime Video on July 29.

In the film, “Five friends set out on one last adventure along Thailand’s stunning coast, eager for a final thrill before life in the real world begins. They sign up for a guided swim through a remote cave system known as The Devil’s Mouth, a natural wonder that’s as breathtaking as it is unforgiving. Deep inside the labyrinth of narrow waterways, their journey takes a terrifying turn when they discover that a freak storm the week before flooded the caves with sea life.

The creatures died in the fresh water, but something survived… and it’s hunting them now— fast, silent, and deadly. Every corridor they round is overflowing with anxiety, and every wrong turn becomes a deadly encounter. As panic spreads and their sense of direction slips away, the group begins to fracture. Trust erodes, fear takes over, and survival becomes a savage game. In the suffocating darkness, every choice could be their last as they learn that to make it out alive, sacrifices must be made.”

Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare, Imaginary) directs the shark attack movie from a script he revised from Aja Gabel (“Sunny”) and Myung Joh Wesner (“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”).

Kathryn Newton (Abigail, Lisa Frankenstein, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come), Lana Condor (Pretty Lethal), Nico Hiraga, Gavin Casalegno, Tommi Rose, and Tayme Thapthimthong star.

The upcoming survival thriller The Devil’s Mouth has been rated PG-13 by the MPA for “violent content, bloody images, some language, and suggestive material.”
