R.I.P. Gene Wilder Passes Away at 83

Published

on

Incredibly sad news is hitting the internet as it’s being reported that Gene Wilder has passed away at age 83, according to his family.

Wilder, born Jerome Silberman, began his acting career in the early 60’s and quickly became one of the most esteemed and recognized comedic actors. He appeared in several films from Mel Brooks, including 1974’s absolutely brilliant Young Frankenstein, which saw Wilder portray a descendent of the original Dr. Frankenstein who continued his grandfather’s work only to see similar results. He also starred in the 1986 horror/comedy Haunted Honeymoon, which he also co-wrote and directed.

His role as Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a marvel to behold. The film simultaneously had me loving and then fearing his character. I know many people who state that they had nightmares because of the tunnel sequence in that film, and I’m one of them.

Wilder was never in any “true” horror films but his impact on me is undeniable. I’ve laughed more times as a result of his humor and jokes than I can count and the happiness he brought me cannot be explained. I’m absolutely heartbroken right now.

To the friends and family of Mr. Wilder, you have my condolences. To everyone who loved his work, never let it die.

Rest in peace, Gene. Thank you for all the laughs.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
