Last year’s Mad Max: Fury Road was, in my opinion, one of the greatest post-apocalyptic action films ever made. Tight, explosive, and exhilarating, it was exactly what I was hoping it would be and more.
For a while, there have been rumors about the possibility of director George Miller creating another entry in the franchise, especially considering how successful Fury Road was critically, although not necessarily commercially. Although the director stated early in the year that he wasn’t interested in making any more Mad Max films, he then went on to say that he wants to shoot something smaller, something without a lot of graphics that wouldn’t have him in the hot desert sun for weeks at a time, before he returns to the series.
Suddenly, a wild news post from Australia’s Herald Sun appears, which is claiming that a prequel to Fury Road is in the works and could begin filming by the end of the year.
The site reports, “The prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road starring Tom Hardy will be filmed in and around Broken Hill… Pre-production is gearing up on the multi-million-dollar action-packed Warner Bros franchise, with NSW’s Broken Hill Studios Miller’s first choice for shooting, which could start as soon as later this year.”
This raises some interesting questions regarding the story they have lined up. In Fury Road, this was the first time these characters interacted with one another, let alone even meeting. So how is Tom Hardy going to appear in the film? Maybe this new film IS a prequel but it leads up to the moment when Fury Road begins? We don’t really get why the War Boys are chasing Max, so that could be an interesting story in and of itself.
Or is the term “prequel” being used a bit too strongly here? After all, each of the Mad Max movies take place in the same universe but are independent of one another.
No matter what, I’m all for another Mad Max film. I just hope George Miller doesn’t have to endure such a long filming delay, as he did with Fury Road.
