It seems that the disappointments will never cease to end when it comes to hearing about potential sequels to 2012’s incredible Dredd. We’ve been hearing about a potential TV series for a while now, although it’s uncertain if that’s the route the developers want to take. What we do know is that the producers and cast can’t seem to get on the same page, with some saying that fans should hold out hope while others are saying to let it rest in peace. As for me, I live by the words of Galaxy Quest‘s Cmdr. Peter Quincy Taggart: “Never give up, never surrender!”
With all this talk of sequels to the film, it’s interesting to hear that the first movie apparently had a different story. Judge Dredd co-creator John Wagner spoke recently with ScreenGeek, who told them that the first film was originally brought to Fox and would’ve seen Dredd deal with Judge Death.
“That was actually the first script that Alex Garland did was a Judge Death script but Fox, who they were dealing with at the time, turned it down. They wanted more nuts and bolts before they went into the [metaphysical],” Wagner explained. He also stated that a TV show might be a great way to go with this character. “It would work very well as a television show – it just depends on how it’s done. It could work very as a film. I mean – everyone wants to see Judge Death, don’t they?”
Perhaps the most important thing that Wagner said though was that there will be a sequel. It’s just a matter of time. “Well, there will be a sequel, I just don’t know when or who’ll do it but it’ll happen,” he confidently put forth.
That last bit got me so excited that I’m going to set my weapon to “incendiary” and pop a couple of rounds into the air so that everyone can see the fireworks! Okay, in reality I just did a little dance in my office chair but let me have my moment, alright?!
