Earlier this year, I posted a video from YouTube user CouchTomato, who showed 24 reasons why A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and X-Men were, in many ways, the same movie. For many, it was a reach but I found the connections to be evident not of one copying the other but of films finding similar themes that speak to relatable experiences we can connect to. If a movie doesn’t connect with us, the audience, in any way, then what need to we have to invest ourselves in the story?
That’s why I want to post CouchTomato’s newest video, which highlights the similarities between Insidious: Chapter 2 and Poltergeist 2. Once again, there are several connectible dots that allow us to connect with the film, such as fear of parents yet the overpowering love we feel so as to try and save them or the times when the parents enlist the help of the grandmother to watch the children.
Again, it’s easy to say that these are coincidences and that Couch Tomato is just weaving something out of nothing but I think he’s onto something. In fact, while I think the presentation that they’re “the same movie” is wrong, what he’s showing is that people have experiences that are shared and that movies are a reflection of that.
Then again, it’s Friday and maybe I’m just excited for the weekend and, as written before, weaving something out of nothing. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments!
