The original Ghostbusters, okay? We’re not talking about Paul Feig’s version here, so put away the pitchforks and torches.
Renowned comic book artist and illustrator Bernie Wrightson is currently pushing a Kickstarter for an art portfolio of sketches and designs he did for the 1985 horror film Silver Bullet, which was written by Stephen King. To help spread the word, a short interview with Wrightson was released where he talks about the designs he came up with for the original Ghostbusters back in 1983 during pre-production.
The video references the climactic battle, which we know as taking place on top of Dana’s apartment building. However, that wasn’t what was conceived in earlier drafts of the script. Rather, the ghostbusters would’ve entered a gate into Hell itself, with a winding pathway that seemingly floats in air with no support beams. Some of the hallways and gates that were designed by Wrightson are absolutely stunning and I can’t imagine how beautiful they might’ve looked had they been built. Then again, the ending we have no is pretty fantastic on its own, so I guess this is just one of those tidbits we learned where it could’ve been cool but it hasn’t changed my opinion of the original at all.
The images appear in the video below starting around 1:35 and they’re gorgeous. Full of rich detail and wonderful imagination, they’re truly a sight to behold.
