Sad news to report as actress Guadalupe Natalia “Lupita” Tovar, who played Eva Steward in the 1931 Spanish-language version of Dracula, has passed away at 106, according to a Facebook post from her niece Lucy.
The Spanish version of Dracula was filmed at night using the same sets but with a different cast and director. Universal did this when they realized they could make additional money from Latin American audiences by making the same film twice, once for English speaking audiences and once for Spanish speakers. Tovar also appeared in the remake of The Cat and the Canary, La Voluntad del Muerto.
Tovar was the grandmother to writers Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz, who were both nominated for an Oscar for 2002’s About a Boy.
We send our deepest condolences to her family and friends.
