Criterion home video editions of films are widely regarded as being among the very best that can be purchased. The amount of time, effort, and passion put into packing each title with as much extra content, in the highest quality possible mind you, is unparalleled (Shout! Factory and Arrow Video are definitely the closest competitors, when it comes to horror). When a film is added to the Criterion family, it’s often a title that commands respect and admiration, one that is critically acclaimed or has significant importance to the film world. As a result, there aren’t a lot of horror titles on the label as our genre is held in rather low regard by much of society. Ah well, their loss.
As anyone who’s looked at a Criterion edition of a film can tell you, the covers have a certain style about them that can be immediately identified. The site Fake Criterion allows users to generate faux covers for films that aren’t on the label but that many feel would make for a wonderful addition. Many emulate Criterion’s aesthetic so as to make the final “product” all the more believable while others do something a bit more flamboyant.
