Starz Streaming a Ton of Horror in December

Published

on

While Amazon, Netflix and Hulu are slowly adding new genre titles to their streaming services, Starz keeps dropping bombs.

This continues this coming December with a rash of new horror films being added, not to mention you get to watch all of Sam Raimi’s “Ash vs Evil Dead”, which isn’t a bad added bonus.

On December 1st they’ll be adding a quartet of Child’s Play films to go along with Tom Holland’s masterpiece that’s already on the app. Now you’ll be able to catch Child’s Play 2 (1990), Child’s Play 3 (1991), Bride of Chucky (1998), and even Seed of Chucky (2004), although Seed of Chucky will not be included.

On the same date they’ll be adding Joe Dante’s hilarious 1989 The ‘Burbs in which Tom Hanks plays an overstressed suburbanite who struggles to prove his paranoid theory that the new family on the block are part of a murderous cult. When was the last time you saw David Cronenberg’s The Dead Zone (1983) in which Cristopher Walken stars as a man awakens from a coma to discover he has a psychic detective ability? That’s joining Tobe Hooper’s The Funhouse (1981) as well as The Grudge (2004) remake and it’s sequel The Grudge 2 (2006).

On December 2nd Starz will add Clive Barker’s criminally underrated Lord of Illusions (1995), which stars Scott Bakula as a NY private investigator who stumbles onto members of a fanatic cult, who are waiting for the resurrection of their leader Nix.

Lastly, December 9th adds The Remains (2015) and the awesome The X-Files (1998) movie, which ties directly into an arc of the “X-Files” television series.

GOOD MANNERS blu-ray

One of contemporary horror’s best werewolf movies is 2017’s Good Manners, and it’s finally set to receive a proper physical media release.

Icarus Films is partnering with OCN Distribution to unleash a new Blu-ray that’s now available to preorder via Vinegar Syndrome. and with a limited edition slipcover.

Set in São Paulo, the film follows Clara, a lonely nurse from the outskirts of the city who is hired by mysterious and wealthy Ana to be the nanny of her soon to be born child. Against all odds, the two women develop a strong bond. But a fateful night marked by a full moon changes their plans.

Good Manners is the second collaboration between filmmakers Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra, who write and direct. Zama’s Rui Poças‘ cinematography captures this unique werewolf tale described as “Disney meets Jacques Tourneur.”

Our own Trace Thurman wrote in his review, “With Good Manners, Rojas and Dutro have made one of the best werewolf movies ever made. That they are able juggle commentaries on racism and classism while still managing to tell two deeply affecting love stories is remarkable.”

BONUS FEATURES:

  • Commentary from film critics Shelagh Rowan-Legg and Carolyn Mauricette
  • 12-page booklet with an essay by film critic Nicolas Pedrero-Setzer
  • Making-of short film: The Making of a Werewolf (2 mins)
  • Two additional short films from the filmmakers: A STEM (15 mins), directed by Juliana Rojas & Marco Dutras, and DOPPELGANGER (24 mins), directed by Juliana Rojas
