Mike Flanagan Pushes Fans to Purchase ‘Before I Wake’ From Canada

Relativity’s The Disappointments Room took on an entirely new meaning when it stole the slot originally set for Mike Flanagan’s (Oculus, Hush, Ouija: Origin of EvilBefore I Wake (read our review), a fresh child-horror film starring Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, Dash Mihok, Annabeth Gish and Jacob Tremblay.

Flanagan’s film has been getting shafted for years now, being moved around the release schedule more than a game of musical chairs. As of this writing there is no U.S. date for the film, which has been caught in the middle of Relativity’s bankruptcy woes, which included a battle with Netflix (who claimed they had a right to stream the film before its theatrical run would even happen).

Now, Flanagan is getting vocal, obviously distressed that his film has yet to be releases here in the States. A new Facebook post shares news that the pic will arrive in Canada on Blu-ray January 10th, and that it will work in our Blu-ray players. In fact, he’s buying his own copy from there!

In Before I Wake, which screened at this past July’s Fantasia Film Festival, “Jessie and Mark, recovering from the death of their young son Sean, decide to take in 8-year-old Cody as a foster child. Cody seems sweet, loving and bright in every way, except that he is afraid to sleep. They soon discover why: Cody’s dreams manifest in reality as he sleeps. In Jessie’s grief, she tries to use Cody’s supernatural abilities to reconnect with her dead son. Soon she discovers that Cody’s nightmares manifest as well, as they experience both the intense wonder – and intense terror – that only a child’s imagination could conjure. To save their new family, Jessie and Mark must uncover the truth behind Cody’s nightmares.

Our very own Daniel Kurland reviewed the film, calling it “A haunted fairy tale from a growing master…

‘Hokum’ Heads Home to Digital Tomorrow Ahead of Physical Media Release in August

Hokum Review - Hokum Digital Release Date

After scaring up a strong theatrical run, Oddity director Damian McCarthy’s Hokum heads home to Digital this week.

Settle in for a spooky supernatural chiller as Hokum arrives on all Digital platforms to rent or own beginning June 2, followed by a Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD Combo and DVD release on August 11, 2026.

Adam Scott (“Severance”) stars in Hokum as reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman. When he retreats to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, the staff’s tales of an ancient witch haunting the honeymoon suite take hold of his mind. Disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance draw Ohm into a nightmarish confrontation with the darkest corners of his past.

Peter Coonan (“The Alienist: Angel of Darkness”), David Wilmot (“Station Eleven”), Florence Ordesh (“Departure”), Michael Patric (“Frontier”), Will O’Connell (“Game of Thrones”), Brendan Conroy (“Bodkin”), and Austin Amelio (“The Walking Dead”) also star.

Get a peek at the upcoming physical media release below, including a few special features.

Spooky Pictures’ Roy Lee (Weapons) & Steven Schneider (Insidious) produce alongside Image Nation’s Derek Dauchy (Late Night with the Devil), Tailored Film’s Ruth Treacy, Julianne Forde, & Mairtín de Barra, and Cweature Features’ Ken Kao & Josh Rosenbaum.

I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “A quaint Irish hotel with a deeply haunted history awaits an American writer in McCarthy’s third outing, continuing his streak for folkloric tales of supernatural karma and spine-tingling terror with a dark sense of humor.”

What’s next from Damian McCarthy? He’s currently writing a haunted house movie, but recent comments suggest he may be moving into other genres beyond that upcoming project.
