The awesomely fun Beyond the Gates (read Kalyn’s review) is set to make it’s Phoenix premiere at FilmBar in downtown Phoenix on Friday, February 10th at 10:00 PM. Festivities leading up to the screening will actually kick off at 8:00 PM with a VHS Tape Swap where horror hounds can buy/trade/exchange horror memorabilia from VHS tapes, magazines, posters and so on with other liked minded individuals. And this is all just the tip of the iceberg! The film’s director and Arizona native Jackson Stewart will be in attendance and participating in a post-screening Q&A that will be part of a podcast hosted by BS Movies Podcast! Tickets for the film are only $9.

This is going to be a rad evening, I can guarantee you that. FilmBar is one of my favorite theaters in the entire world. It’s a cool little joint with nice vibes that is always playing the most interesting films from cult classics to newer indie darlings. No matter what you end up seeing at FilmBar you’re sure to have a one-of-a-kind experience. And if you’re not looking to see a movie FilmBar is just a really cool place to hang out and grab a drink. If you live in Phoenix you should be going here on a regular basis. If you’re ever visiting Phoenix you should make it a point to stop by.

And then you have the movie, which we all know is awesome. Seriously if you haven’t seen Beyond the Gates yet what are you waiting for? What are you waiting for?! It’s so much fun and such a loving nod to VHS board games. That Stewart guy, he’s going places!

Then there’s the VHS Tape Swap which is just a really cool added bonus and totally fits with the film. VHS Tape Swaps are always exciting because you never know what you’re going to find. Even if you’re not into collected VHS you’re likely to find something really cool. Go geek out and have a good time!

Seven months after their alcoholic father’s disappearance, estranged brothers Gordon and John Hardesty reunite to liquidate their Dad’s anemic video store. Soon after, they unearth an old VCR board game that acts as an inter-dimensional hub to a nightmare world where their Father’s soul is trapped and can only be saved by playing the game. The film is a horror adventure that pays loving tribute to the VHS format, 1980’s horror movies and board games of the era.

FilmBar is located at 815 N. 2nd St, Phoenix, AZ 85004 on Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix. Tickets can be purchased here.

Dev Patel’s ‘Monkey Man’ Is Now Available to Watch at Home!

After pulling in $28 million at the worldwide box office this month, director (and star) Dev Patel’s critically acclaimed action-thriller Monkey Man is now available to watch at home.

You can rent Monkey Man for $19.99 or digitally purchase the film for $24.99!

Monkey Man is currently 88% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with Bloody Disgusting’s head critic Meagan Navarro awarding the film 4.5/5 stars in her review out of SXSW back in March.

Meagan raves, “While the violence onscreen is palpable and painful, it’s not just the exquisite fight choreography and thrilling action set pieces that set Monkey Man apart but also its political consciousness, unique narrative structure, and myth-making scale.”

“While Monkey Man pays tribute to all of the action genre’s greats, from the Indonesian action classics to Korean revenge cinema and even a John Wick joke or two, Dev Patel’s cultural spin and unique narrative structure leave behind all influences in the dust for new terrain,” Meagan’s review continues.

She adds, “Monkey Man presents Dev Patel as a new action hero, a tenacious underdog with a penetrating stare who bites, bludgeons, and stabs his way through bodies to gloriously bloody excess. More excitingly, the film introduces Patel as a strong visionary right out of the gate.”

Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

Monkey Man is produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions.
