‘Flatliners’ Remake Will Continue to Stop Hearts

Published

Today is a good day to die.

In Joel Schumacher’s 1990 cult Flatliners, starring Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Julia Roberts, four Medical students experiment on “near death” experiences that involve past tragedies until the dark consequences begin to jeopardize their lives.

On September 29, 2017, Sony Pictures plays God once again with their own version of Flatliners, this time featuring Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons. Directed by Niels Arden Oplev, Bloody Disgusting was able to obtain the official synopsis, but unfortunately there are no clues to how they plan on modernizing the story.

In ‘Flatliners’, five medical students, hoping to gain insight into the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment. By stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience.   As the investigation becomes more and more perilous, they are forced to confront the sins of their pasts, as well as contend with the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.

One change is that there’s an additional student. Otherwise, the only real insight we have is that Ben Ripley’s screenplay is secretly a sequel. In fact, Kiefer Sutherland returns to his role from 27 years ago.

I play a professor at the medical university,” Sutherland told Metro last July. “It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I’m the same character I was in the original ‘Flatliners’ but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film.

Sutherland played Nelson Wright in the original film, a medical student who wanted to see what the afterlife held by allowing himself, and his partners, to be killed only to be resuscitated minutes afterwards.

I loved making the first film and when I was asked if I would be interested in taking part in this, it didn’t take more than a minute to say yes,” Sutherland excitedly told the site.

The film is on display at the ongoing CinemaCon where we hope the first footage will be shared.

They Follow Disasterpeace

Maika Monroe (Longlegs) isn’t the only one reuniting with It Follows director David Robert Mitchell on the sequel They Follow. The filmmaker revealed key collaborators are also joining the project.

Speaking with Empire, Mitchell confirmed that multiple crew members are returning for the sequel, and that it’ll feature a new score from Disasterpeace!

Maika is back for this, and [cinematographer] Mike [Gioulakis], and the editor, Julio [C. Perez IV],Mitchell told the outlet.Disasterpeace will be doing a score.

That’s great news, considering how impactful the artist’s score was on the original 2014 film. Mitchell agrees:I wouldn’t want to do a sequel without him. That first movie is so much to do with his fantastic music, so I’m excited about seeing what he does with this.

The filmmaker notes that he’s also proud of his script for They Follow, which will do its own thing while still being connected to the original film. Of course, plot details remain scarce at this time.

It’s very dark,” Monroe recently teased. We’re pushing the boundaries on this one for sure.

In the first movie, Maika Monroe’s Jay Height is a young woman followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter. In the sequel, the threat is now EVERYWHERE.

Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice) is reportedly joining the sequel.

NEON and Good Fear Content are producing They Follow.
