Samuel L. Jackson Battling ‘The Blob’ Thanks to…China?

Published

Samuel L. Jackson was announced as part of the cast of Simon West‘s long-gestured The Blob re-remake back in 2015, but things have since gone quiet after announcing a fall shoot that same year. With various markets going on, producers Goldcrest Films updated their website with a new poster, only they removed Jackson’s name from its listing.

While it looked like Goldcrest may have been thinking of moving on, Jackson, who just starred in the Warner Bros. Kong: Skull Island, is still gung ho to battle the Blob. In fact, he says that the film has been financed out of China.

I’ve been running from or chasing King Kong, Godzilla, the Wolfman, whatever, since I was a kid [in Chatanooga, Tenn.],” he told The Toronto Sun earlier this month. “We’d go home and pretend to do all that stuff. So I’m doing ‘Kong’ for the same reason I’ll probably be doing ‘The Blob’. I just got a call the other day (where the producers) said they finally got their money from China to do ‘Blob’.”

Well, that’s some pretty huge news! West, who also directed  Con-Air, The Expendables 2, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and When a Stranger Calls, is still getting behind the camera for the modern take. According to the article, the plan is to film before Jackson takes off for the next Avengers sequel.

Based on the 1958 sci-fi classic that starred Steve McQueen, they’re billing this version as a terrifying “reimagining” of an enduring horror icon.

When a band of miners uncover something hidden deep beneath the earth they unwittingly unleash a hideous creature beyond imagination. Now the townsfolk must fightback, before it destroys everything.

A 1972 sequel, Beware! The Blob, was helmed by Larry Hagman, and in 1988, Chuck Russell directed Kevin Dillon in a remake of the original.

“With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob,” West said back in 2015. “The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”

No word on when or if this will even happen as shooting was originally to take place in the fall of 2015.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
