Is This the Setting of the Third ‘Alien’ Prequel’?

Published

Spoiler warning. While Damon Lindelof didn’t come aboard Prometheus until after Jon Spaihts delivered a screenplay, the writer was the main catalyst for changing the film’s twist, opening the franchise up for multiple sequels. Originally a one-shot prequel to bridge directly into Ridley Scott’s Alien, Prometheus‘ finale was changed to show Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David’s head (Michael Fassbender) heading off to the Engineers’ home planet.

In the follow-up Alien: Covenant, the assumption being made is that the Covenant crew detours directly to the Engineer home planet, which was obliterated by David upon his arrival. But what if this wasn’t actually the Engineers’ home planet and instead was one of their many colonies? While Lindelof had nothing to do with Covenant, he does speculate that it’s possible that the third film would take David and Daniels to the Engineers’ actual home planet.

“I think that one of the conversations that we had at the end of Prometheus is, Shaw and David have basically locked in on the coordinates of the planet where the Engineers came from,” he tells Collider. “What does that place look like? Ridley called it ‘Paradise’. What happens when they land on that planet? It doesn’t feel like they’ve gotten there yet in Covenant, Covenant felt like it maybe was a detour prior to them arriving at the place of origin so I don’t want to spoil any place that he might still be wanting to go, but the conversations that he and I had about where the story goes next were largely about the place where the Engineers were from and less the events of Covenant.”

With that said, the original title to Alien: Covenant was actually Alien/Prometheus: Paradise. Does this mean Scott decided to save that trip for the third film? Or does it mean he just decided to name each film after the crew’s ship? It is interesting, however, to think about how the Engineers were not only responsible for the creation of life on Earth, but also were storing weapons on another planet not seen in Covenant. Is it that hard to fathom that maybe, just maybe, the next film will take place on another Engineer planet, only this time David has come rocking the ultimate secret weapon… a pair of baby facehuggers?

It’s all fun speculation. But really, I just want Fox to tell us that they’re moving forward on another even though Covenant is sinking at the box office.
