‘Resident Evil’ Reboot Could Remain Action-Focused
As much as I enjoy the mindless popcorn-munching nonsense that Paul W.S. Anderson delivered over the past 15 years, I’d really like to see Resident Evil return to its horror roots, especially after playing the absolutely terrifying “Resident Evil 7”. But in looking at the box office numbers for the six films, it’s clear that, even in rebooting the franchise, they’ll probably stick to the same tone.
While absolutely nothing has been decided yet, franchise producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi Collider spoke with about the possibilities for the retooling, revealing that he enjoys the action in the live-action adaptations.
“I personally like Paul W.S. Anderson’s [direction] on the live-action [films]. Stuff like that, I would like to see more action,” he tells the site.
He also confirms a completely new cast and crew, which obviously begins with the hiring of horror director-turned-producer James Wan.
“We will be getting a new director and also the cast members are going to change, too, but I’m looking forward to doing it.”
Wan, who is behind the Saw, Dead Silence, Insidious, and The Conjuring franchises, was announced a few weeks back to produce the first film in the rebooted series. Greg Russo (Mortal Kombat) will be scripting the franchise-starter. A director for the Constantin, Atomic Monster and Screen Gems film has not yet been hired.

Brendan Fraser is back for the upcoming fourth installment in The Mummy franchise from directors Radio Silence, and Michael Johnston (Obsession) is now in talks to join him.
The Hollywood Reporter lets us know tonight that Michael Johnston is in “early talks” to join The Mummy 4, which will release in theaters on October 15, 2027 via Universal.
Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah will reprise their iconic roles as Rick O’Connell, Evelyn O’Connell, and Jonathan Carnahan in the upcoming movie.
Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not, Scream 5-6) are directing from a script by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill).
Plot details are being kept under wraps at this time, but the brand new sequel is expected to disregard the events of the third movie, in which Rachel Weisz did not appear.
“It’s just really beautiful and scary and sweeping, and it’s awesome,” Gillet teases. Bettinelli-Olpin adds that the film “has all of the heart and the character that you could hope for.”
A remake of the classic Universal monster movie that took an action-adventure approach, The Mummy was released in 1999 and grossed $417 million worldwide. It was followed by The Mummy Returns in 2001 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008.
