‘The Predator’ Isn’t a Sequel or Reboot

Published

Is Shane Black‘s The Predator a remake, reboot, sequel or spinoff to Predator? Are you guys sick of all of the conflicting reports yet? Well, here’s one that will scramble your brain even more.

Star Keegan-Michael Key shares his perspective in an interview over at EW:

Predator was a real privilege to do, and if people think they’re going to see a remake of the original movie, they’re in for a surprise. A very pleasant surprise. It’s not a sequel. [It has] lots of elements of humor. It certainly lives in the universe of the five films that were made. I think that’s probably the best way to say it and the only way I can say it right now.”

It’s not a remake and it’s not a sequel but it lives within the Predator universe, which can only mean one thing: it’s a new story that quite possibly references the original 1987 movie. This isn’t much of a surprise as this has become the new directive over the past few years in avoiding the stigma in “remaking” a franchise. In fact, it’s already been revealed that Jake Busey is playing the son of Gary Busey’s Predator 2 character in the film opening in theaters August 3, 2018.

The movie once again features a group of unsuspecting humans who slowly realize that fierce hunter-aliens are in their midst, this time in what could be a suburban setting.

Boyd Holbrook, Jacob Tremblay, Olivia Munn, Keegan-Michael Key, Edward James Olmos, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Alfie Allen, Yvonne Strahovski all star.

Black directed from a script he co-wrote with Fred Dekker.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
