‘When it Rings’ Waits for a Deadly Call

Published

on

Shooting has started in Los Angeles on the independent thriller When it Rings, Variety reports, with a plot that reminds me of the “Walking Dead” arc in which Rick is speaking to his dead wife on the telephone.

Sally Kirkland (pictured above in “The Most Hated Woman in America”, Valley of the Dolls, JFK) and Mel Novak (Game of Death) have joined the cast of opposite newcomer Gonzalo Martin in the film from first-time directors Ty Haisten and David Rivers.

A young man (Martin) returning to his childhood home to get it ready for sale and uncovering an old toy phone he once used to “talk” to his dead sister, who drowned a decade ago in the backyard and made his mother too unstable to raise him. After the phone begins ringing, he must decide whether to answer it or get rid of the only connection to his dead sister.

Kirkland stars as the neighbor-turned-caretaker for the unstable mother and Novak portrays the unwitting buyer of the home.

Sophia Monti, Mann Alfonso and Amy Ellenberger co-star.

Producers are Tyrone Tann of Stauros Entertainment, Ellecina Eck, Haisten and Rivers.

Found footage franchise The Blair Witch Project is coming back to life with a new movie, and Lionsgate has announced today that the Blair Witch will return in 2027.

The Blair Witch Project releases in theaters on September 24, 2027.

Check out the cryptic release date announce video below…

Dylan Clark (Portrait of God) is set to direct the new take on the seminal found footage horror movie, with the original movie’s filmmakers and cast on board to produce the project.

Chris Thomas Devlin wrote the screenplay.

Original Blair Witch Project filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, producer Gregg Hale, and stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams will executive produce.

Producer James Wan told Indiewire, “Getting all the original people that were involved in the original Blair Witch, getting their blessing and getting them involved. That was very important for all of us. We wanted to pay respect to the legacy of it all.”

Blumhouse’s Jason Blum and Atomic Monster‘s James Wan are producing the new Blair Witch Project with Roy Lee and Divide/Conquer’s Adam Hendricks & Greg Gilreath.

The official press release teases this week, “The horror masterminds at Blumhouse Atomic Monster (Obsession, The Conjuring, Backrooms) remind us how scary the woods can be with this groundbreaking new chapter of The Blair Witch Project.”

Executive producers also include Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Steven Schneider.

Much like David F. Sandberg, Curry Barker, and Kane Parsons before him, Dylan Clark was discovered on YouTube after going viral with his horror short Portrait of God. That short is already being expanded into a feature, with Jordan Peele and Sam Raimi producing.

Dylan Clark is also writing to direct an adaptation of his short film Story Time.
