Pet Sematary

It’s been three years since we reported that Jeff Buhler‘s screenplay was nearly complete on the fresh adaptation of Stephen King‘s Pet Sematary. Prior to that, 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was attached to direct for Paramount, with Guillermo del Toro vying for the job back in 2015. While the project appears to be dead, the Stephen King boom is sure to prove that Pet Sematary has nine lives.

In fact, with New Line Cinema to release the new IT adaptation in theaters next month, director Andrés Muschietti is hoping to possibly dig up Pet Sematary over at Paramount.

“We’re huge fans of Pet Sematary,” he told Toronto Sun. “If we can get our hands on that and do the Pet Sematary we want to do, that will be something. One day, maybe.”

The 1989 Pet Sematary scored up a 1992 sequel where t he ancient Indian cemetery with the power to raise the dead returns and influences the lives of new residents.

Before Muschietti can even think about tackling Pet Sematary he’s going to have to focus on the sequel to IT, which could begin filming as early as 2018. The good news, however, is that unlike The Dark Tower, Muschietti is respectful of King’s work.

“We had no interest in adapting a Stephen King book just for its title,” added Muschietti. “We are true fans of his work.”
