Darren Aronofsky Attempted to Capture a Single Emotion in ‘mother!’

Published

The thing about being a powerful filmmaker is you’re able to do anything you want. This is why it sucks to see someone super talented go on to direct, I don’t know, Transformers 5? Not Darren Aronofsky. While he once nearly directed an R-rated Wolverine film, he instead opted for more indie masterpieces The Wrestler and Black Swan. Now, he’s experimenting on a minimalist level that I find immensely interesting. In the Vogue interview shared last week, Aronofsky revealed that he wrote the script to mother!, his new cult thriller starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, in just five days. A follow-up with EW adds an explanation behind the quick turnaround:

“I had this idea, and I felt it rise up in my head. I took a long weekend and got into this fever dream and just pumped it out. [Laughs] We’ll see what the results are. It’s been an interesting way to approach it — trying to capture a single emotion and trying to tell that two-hour story out of that emotion.”

And while we know the movie is a cult thriller that follows a couple’s relationship that is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, we have no idea what the dynamic between the actors are. The article explains that Lawrence and Bardem play the married couple and that Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris are the invaders. Speaking of: “It has home-invasion elements and is definitely a thriller,” Aronofsky allows. “It is closer to Black Swan in spirit than anything I have done in a while.”

Even with all the chatter, the trailer offers nothing in regards to what we can expect.

“The best thing about this film will be the surprise of it,” Aronofsky insists. “It’s an intense journey and it’s definitely the biggest roller coaster in the park. Only get on it if you really want to do the loop-the-loop.” Bardem agrees with the vow of silence. “We all know every f—ing thing all the time,” he says. “That’s good for some things and bad for others. We have to keep this mystery going if we can.” Mystery accomplished.

mother! arrives in theaters on September 15, 2017.

Dead Mail SXSW Dead Mail interview

One of the genre films we’re looking forward to checking out at SXSW this year is Dead Mail, written and directed by Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy and premiering on March 9.

Meagan Navarro will be reviewing Dead Mail for Bloody Disgusting as part of her SXSW coverage, and she writes in her preview for the upcoming fest: “Dead Mail leans heavily into the ’80s analog aesthetic, delivering a unique crime thriller unafraid to get offbeat with its dark narrative. Expect its characters to be as atypical as Dead Mail‘s sense of style.”

In the SXSW 2024 horror film…

“On a desolate, Midwestern county road, a bound man crawls towards a remote postal box, managing to slide a blood-stained plea-for-help message into the slot before a panicking figure closes in behind him. The note makes its way to the county post office and onto the desk of Jasper, a seasoned and skilled “dead letter” investigator, responsible for investigating lost mail and returning it to its sender. As he investigates further, Jasper meets Trent, a strange yet unassuming man who has taken up residence at the men’s home where Jasper lives.

“When Trent unexpectedly shows up at Jasper’s office, it becomes clear he has a vested interest in the note, and will stop at nothing to retrieve it…”

Sterling Macer, Jr., John Fleck, Susan Priver, Micki Jackson, Tomas Boykin, and Nick Heyman star in Dead Mail. Preview the film with an exclusive image gallery below.
