After playing Sitges and Fantastic Fast this past fall, we now have the official trailer for Yayo Herrero’s The Maus, starring August Wittgenstein, Alma Terzic, and Ella Jazz.
In the Serbian film, “Alex and Selma are a couple in love who travels to the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina. When their car runs aground in the middle of the forest, they decide to go looking for help to the nearby town. Along the way, Selma – a Muslim survivor of the Balkan War – begins to suspect that a mysterious force accompanies them. Alex, a confident and happy young European, tries to take the crazy idea out of his mind. But Selma constantly clings to her Muslim “hamajlija” amulet, causing the mysterious force to emerge from the forest.”

“Maus confronts two visions of seeing life: Alex is the “happy Europe”, that is, ours,” explains Herrero. “Instead, Selma represents “Europe of terror”, that of the survivors of the Wars. They both embody the metaphor of our present-day Europe. They are two worlds that are sought but not found. That they will never be able to remain united by much that they take hold of the hand.
“Seeing Europe today, under the Islamist threat, I remember the words of Predrag Matvejevith, professor of Slavic Literature at the University of Rome: ‘Europe lost a decisive battle against Islam in Bosnia.’
