‘Coco’ Director is a Huge Fan of ‘The Shining’ and Put in Three Easter Eggs

Disney/Pixar’s Coco hit home video this past Tuesday, and the animated family adventure film – centered on a 12-year-old boy who is accidentally transported to the land of the dead – has not one but three fun Easter egg tributes to a decidedly less family-friendly film: Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, which the director happens to be a mega fan of!

Lee Unkrich is such a big fan of The Shining that he runs the blog The Overlook Hotel, and he’s put tributes to his favorite film into every animated movie he’s worked on to date. Those movies with unexpected Shining homages include Toy Story, Finding Nemo and Toy Story 3… and now, last year’s Day of the Dead-themed Coco!

Unkrich directed Coco, and Slash Film has tipped us off to the three Shining Easter eggs he put into his latest movie. In one scene, Jack Torrance’s trusty axe is embedded into a tree stump, cleverly positioned next to a red drum. A… REDRUM. In another blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, a painting of the Grady Twins is on display.

So keep your eyes peeled whenever you get around to watching/revisiting!
