Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rønning is attached to direct feature Here There Be Monsters, which he co-wrote with his brother, Andreas, reports THR.

MRC, the independent film and television studio behind Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, is developing the sci-fi thriller.

While details are being kept underwater, this project was in the works at Warner Bros. over six years ago and once had House of Wax, Unknown and Orphan director Jaume Collet-Serra attached to direct.

Brian Helgeland’s script at the time was seeking to attach Bradley Cooper to star in a film in which he would battle a giant squid. “Cooper would play real-life Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones, albeit a much-younger Jones, well before he had famously “not yet begun to fight” the Brits. After he’s stripped of his British naval commission, Jones is hired by a shipping magnate to investigate the disappearance of merchant ships in the North Atlantic, which are used as toothpicks by a giant squid.

Prior to that,  Robert Zemeckis was attached to the Legendary Pictures project that was said to be about Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones with sea monsters. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird was also connected to the project at one time,
