While we’ve been gifted with Guillermo del Toro‘s romantic horror The Shape of Water since late last year, the film continues to open internationally to massive numbers. In fact, it just debuted in China with $10M this past weekend, giving it a $110M international gross to go along with an impressive $62M domestic. While a budget was never released, there’s no way it was more than $15-20M, and with a marketing spend matching we can (severely) estimate a $50M profit going into home video as of last Tuesday.
The Shape of Water was nominated in thirteen Academy Awards, and took home the gold for Best Picture and Director, including “Best Production Design and Original Score.
“In the hidden, high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.” Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg, and of course, Doug Jones.
