Actually, he’s looking to crowdfund an entire *studio*, driven by his fans.
Just about a year ago, back in June 2017, District 9 and Chappie director Neill Blomkamp debuted a nearly 30-minute horror/sci-fi short film titled Firebase, part of his Oats Studios initiative. The concept, in a nutshell, is to make crazy original movies outside the Hollywood system, allowing Blomkamp’s creativity to truly be unrestrained.
With Firebase, Blomkamp brought literal Hell into the Vietnam War. Bending the fabric of space-time, the insanely ambitious short introduced a whole new war enemy in the form of the River God, a hellish beast who has the power to raise the dead…
Set during the Vietnam war, FIREBASE follows American soldier Hines through an ever deepening web of science fiction madness.
Now, Blomkamp is looking to turn Firebase into a feature film, and he needs our help.
Just launched today, the Firebase crowdfunding campaign is a bit different than the ones you’ll find on services like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. For his campaign, Blomkamp has done away with physical perks, ensuring that every dollar is actually going to show up on screen; however much money the fund raises, that’s how much Firebase will be made for.
Blomkamp explains, “We want to build a 21st century studio that is funded directly by fans. The more people online that support us the more content we will put out. We want to create an ecosystem where we are directly fueled by the community. Our goal now is the next FIREBASE film. Help fuel us here. We want to grow and expand, but we need the community’s help.”
He adds, “We will create the FIREBASE film tailored to the incoming dollar amount. If we raise $40 dollars we will film a firebase “Cat” video. If we raise $100 million we will shoot a FIREBASE feature trilogy.”
