Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame has been adapted a handful of times over the years, first in 1911 and perhaps most notably by Universal Studios in 1923. The tale of course also became a Walt Disney animated film in 1996, and it’s getting another adaptation with Idris Elba in front of and behind the camera.
The Wrap reports today that Elba is set to star in, direct and produce a modern retelling of The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Netflix, with the project currently untitled.
Elba will also be producing the film’s music. Other producers on the project include Fred Berger (“La La Land”) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (“Midnight Special”) for Automatik, with Elba and Ana Garantino producing for Elba’s Green Door shingle.
Michael Mitnick (“The Current War”) is penning the script.
