Barbara Crampton Talks ‘Castle Freak’ Remake, Which Will Put More Focus On the Freak and the Lovecraft Universe

We learned earlier this year that Cinestate, the company behind the resurgence of Fangoria as well as the upcoming Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, is developing a remake of Full Moon’s Stuart Gordon-directed Castle Freak, with original star Barbara Crampton producing. Speaking with Daily Dead, the horror icon just teased the approach of the remake.

The script is being written right now, and we’re looking to shoot sometime later this year, beginning of next year,” Crampton told the site. “All the elements for that are coming together really well, and it’s going to be an updated version of the old [film] and have a fresher start and some different characters, with more of the Freak and his backstory.”

She continued, “Also, our goal is to enhance a lot of the Lovecraft elements in the movie to just bring the Lovecraft universe a little bit more to life and a little bit more in the forefront. I’m really excited to read the final version, but we’ve all been working with the writer on the story elements and it’s looking really good. So I’m very excited about that as well.”

In the ’95 film, a man struggles to save his family from the strange and deadly occurrences in the castle they’ve inherited.

Castle Freak will be directed by SFX guru Tate Steinsiek with Dallas Sonnier, Amanda Presmyk and Full Moon’s Charles Band also producing.

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
