Director Luca Guadagnino‘s Suspiria is literally a horror film decades in the making, the Italian filmmaker and star Tilda Swinton reveal to Screen Daily this week. Believe it or not, they’ve been talking about teaming up to remake Dario Argento’s horror classic for 25 years!
“Several centuries we’ve been talking about it,” Swinton exaggerated, detailing that she and Guadagnino began talking about Suspiria when they first met some 25 years ago, sharing a mutual obsession with the 1977 film. She added, “It’s fantastically gratifying to be able to talk about it in the past tense.”
Guadagnino first experienced Argento’s Suspiria when he was just 14 years old, and crazy enough, he used to draw up faux movie posters for “Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria“!
“I was understanding in an hour and 35 minutes that everything was possible in cinema,” he recalls. “Everything was do-able, and [I realized] that you could really upset somebody in a beautiful way with movies.”
The rights to the remake were actually acquired by Guadagnino 10 years ago, with David Gordon Green (Halloween) at one point attached to direct, and Guadagnino producing.
