Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ Sequel Could Have Gone International

Published

Ghosts have been haunting New York City since 1984, but if Paul Feig were allowed to direct a sequel to his 2016 remake of Ghostbusters, he’d take the busting international.

“I definitely wanted us to go to another country,” Feig told Happy Sad Confused podcast. “Because when we were doing the press tour, the international press tour, every country the reporters would come with these drawings or artist renderings of that country’s ghosts. And every country has these really wild ghost stories and ghost characters that they scare kids with or keep people in line with. I really loved the idea of the Ghostbusters going to like Asia. There’s a lot of fun stuff that we could have done.”

Feig’s Ghostbusters ended with Leslie Jones‘ character teasing the return of Zuul. While it’s highly unlikely Feig would get back behind the camera, he assuredly added, “Maybe it will happen still?”

Frankly, I wouldn’t mind seeing Feig take another stab at the franchise under different circumstances. His film became the victim of hate in a violent political climate which turned many “fans” against the remake. Certainly, the whirlwind of drama is part of the film’s negative energy, which absolutely had a partial effect on its box office performance. Not to say the film is good or bad, but it would be nice to see the slate wiped clean and have Feig do something different with the franchise. Taking the ‘busters international and making them the fish out of water would be one helluva a unique turn for the characters.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
