Beginning with the title character, played by Brie Larson, crash landing into a Blockbuster Video, the trailer for Marvel’s Captain Marvel immediately establishes one big thing that sets it apart from other Marvel movies: it’s set in the 1990s, when Blockbuster was at the top of the food chain. And wouldn’t ya know it, it even features a ’90s-authentic Samuel L. Jackson!
Yes, Jackson has been de-aged for the ’90s-set superhero movie, which was clearly inspired by ’90s action movies. Speaking with EW recently, exec producer Jonathan Schwartz explained, “90s action movie is not the worst reference in the world, especially when you start looking at Robocop, Total Recall, even Starship Troopers a little bit. Terminator 2, Independence Day. There’s a high-concept action-movie feel there that ends up being very character-based but also super badass, which is kind of the bullseye we wanted to hit.”
Needless to say, this one just shot to the top of our must-watch list. Long live the ’90s!
