Time to Resume the Hype for ‘The House That Jack Built’ With These Contorted Character Posters

Published

on

Earlier this year, Lars von Trier‘s next film, The House That Jack Built, was the talk of the town when reports surfaced that more than half the audience walked out of the first ever screening at Cannes. It instantly became one of the most controversial films of the year when it was called “vomitive,” “torturous”, and even “vile.”  Even before Suspiria had even an ounce of hype, The House That Jack Built was being dubbed as this year’s most divisive film. I think we all forgot about it, until now.

Zentropa is reclaiming the controversy with these character posters that depict the cast tied up and contorted, along with the film’s director. What makes these controversial is the depiction of violence against women, even though the entire cast (and director) are also tied up and contorted. Interestingly, the art sorta spoils who’s going to perish at the hands of Jack, played by Matt Dillon, although maybe what makes this movie interesting is the conversations that take place prior to the murders? From the earlier looks at the movie, set to be released here in the States by IFC Films, it appears to be in the same vein as American Psycho.

In the film, Dillon stars as a serial killer who views each of his murders as a work of art. Uma Thurman (Kill Bill), Bruno Ganz (Downfall), and Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road) also star with South Korean actor, Yu Ji-tae, best known to us genre fans as the antagonist in Park Chan-wook’s 2003 hardboiled thriller Oldboy.

The project for Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes is being described as a “fast-paced thriller,” and Deadline reports today that Violett Beane (Truth or Dare) has joined the cast.

Newcomer Jacob Robinson has also signed on to star in the mysterious thriller. Previously announced, Meghann Fahy (“White Lotus”) will be leading the cast.

Landon recently teased on Twitter, “This is my love letter to DePalma.”

Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach wrote the script.

Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Brad Fuller and Cameron Fuller — “who brought the script in to Platinum Dunes” — are producing the upcoming Drop. Sam Lerner is an executive producer.

THR notes, “The film is a Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse production for Universal.”
