One of the coolest Jean-Claude Van Damme movies was Universal Soldier, which co-starred Dolph Lundgren as two deceased soldiers who become military cyborgs. A hit back in 1992, it spawned three sequels, two made-for-TV movies and even a video game. Universal Pictures continues to see value in the franchise and is developing a remake with The Equalizer screenwriter Richard Wenk.
“I will say that I’m just finishing up a re-imagining — let’s be clear about this it’s not a remake and it is not a redo — but it is a re-imagining of a movie called Universal Soldier…,” he revealed to Discussing Film.
“[It’s] very much like The Equalizer, it’s the title that inspired me and not the movies…I’m just about to finish (the script) and turn it in this week.”
It sounds as if he’s planning to take the franchise is an entirely new direction, which would actually be welcome even though 2012’s Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning is actually pretty awesome.
