The Remake’s Dr. Loomis, Malcolm McDowell Says He’s Still Never Seen the Original ‘Halloween’

It’s now been 11 years since Rob Zombie brought Michael Myers back to the big screen with his highly divisive Halloween remake, wherein A Clockwork Orange star Malcolm McDowell of course took over the iconic role of Dr. Loomis. McDowell reprised and expanded upon the role in Zombie’s Halloween II, but believe it or not, the legendary actor has *still* never seen a lick of the late Donald Pleasence‘s original franchise performance as the same character!

Brought to our attention by ComicBook.com, McDowell was on hand at the Scare-A-Con convention this past weekend, where he revealed that he’s never actually seen Halloween ’78.

No, I never saw it, still haven’t,” McDowell told the crowd. “I have never seen the original Halloween….I did ask Rob whether I should see it and he went, ‘No. You can see it afterwards.’ Now, I did know Donald Pleasence enough to have a drink with him in a pub, and I always was very entertained by him. He was a lovely man and a wonderful actor; I’ve seen him in many other things. He was a great stage actor, and actor full stop, and he was a very cultured man.”

McDowell added, “So I was thrilled to be asked to carry on in his footsteps, but I wasn’t at all influenced by him since I didn’t see it. I can imagine what he did, because there was nobody that played that sort of menacing character as well as he did. I mean, it was just inherent. He played Blofeld in one of the Bond films. God almighty!

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
