After grossing over $500 million worldwide over the summer, we’ve learned tonight (via Deadline) that a sequel to director Jon Turteltaub’s The Meg is already being developed!
Gravity’s Catherine Xujun Ying said at the U.S.-China Entertainment Summit today, “It’s still in the very early stages, but we’re working on it. We’re trying to keep it secret at this time.”
Gravity Pictures, for the proper context here, co-funded and co-produced The Meg, which was distributed by Warner Bros in the United States and by Gravity in China.
The site adds to the story, “From what Deadline knows, The Meg 2 hasn’t set any screenwriters yet, the project isn’t officially greenlit by Warner Bros, and for the studio to move forward with a part 2 it certainly has to out-wow the first installment. Having Gravity on board certainly makes The Meg 2 more of a reality.”
There’s certainly no shortage of sequel potential here, as author Steve Alten has to date penned a handful of novels in his Meg franchise. Plenty to pull from there, to say the least.
