On August 7th, 2017, popular cartoonist Adam Ellis began telling the story of how a dead child is haunting his apartment and is trying to kill him. His first tweet gained over 55,000 retweets and 76,000 likes, explained knowyourmeme when we first reported on this last December.
“My apartment is currently being haunted by the ghost of a dead child and he’s trying to kill me.”
On December 12th, Ellis updated the Twitter thread about “Dear David”, this time with more photographs of the supposed apparition. Explains the site, Ellis claimed he set his phone to take a picture every 60 seconds, and after hundreds of photos of nothingness, he eventually saw David. The child then slumped over a chair for several minutes, then stood over Ellis, noticed the camera, and evidently approached it.
Recently, BuzzFeed Studios partnered on the film with IT producer Dan Lin’s Rideback, which is now set to be distributed by New Line Cinema, says Collider.
The film will be a high-concept horror thriller based on Ellis’ tweets and images. He says his entire story is true.
“I’ve never been interested in convincing anyone that ghosts are real–I just wanted to tell my story,” Ellis told TheWrap, who broke the news on the film back in June. “If it was all fiction, I probably would’ve updated more than once every couple weeks.”
BuzzFeed and Ellis struck a deal to bring the project to market in partnership with Rideback. Mike Van Waes is attached as the writer, based on a story by Van Waes and Evan Turner. BuzzFeed Studios’ Lauren Dolgan and Hieu Ho will produce alongside Lin and Jonathan Eirich. Turner will serve as executive producer.
