The single most exciting thing about this year’s The Predator is that it was co-written by director Shane Black and Fred Dekker (The Monster Squad, Night of the Creeps), making it the first feature film penned by Dekker since RoboCop 3 way back in 1993.
Love it or hate it (I absolutely *loved* it), The Predator is full of that Black & Dekker charm that made us fall in love with both filmmakers, and damn was it good to see Fred Dekker’s name up on the big screen again. Still though, Dekker hasn’t actually directed a movie since RoboCop 3, which means we’ve now gone 25 years without a Dekker-directed film!
A goddamn crime, if you’re asking me.
Speaking with Retro Injection this month, Dekker touched upon some projects he’s currently got in the works, while also noting that he’s seeking a new project to direct.
“Shane Black and I are developing a cable TV reboot of the 1960s British spy show, The Avengers, which I’m very excited about, and an action movie based on the old Destroyer adventure novels,” Dekker told the site. “I’m also actively trying to find something that would put me back in the director’s chair – that’s really my priority right now.”
We have no idea if Dekker is seeking out a *horror* film to direct, but the idea of the man behind The Monster Squad getting back in the director’s chair sure has us excited.
