Jóhann Jóhannsson’s Score for ‘Mandy’ Should Probably Get an Oscar Nom But the Film is Ineligible

Mandy

Nicolas Cage in 'Mandy'

In the eyes (and ears) of many, the late Jóhann Jóhannsson‘s Mandy score is one of this year’s very best, and the hope was that Jóhannsson would be receiving his final Oscar nomination for his contributions to the film. Jóhannsson, who passed away early this year, had been nominated for The Theory of Everything and Sicario, so he was something of an Oscar favorite.

Unfortunately, we’ve learned this week via Variety, Mandy is ineligible for Academy Awards consideration, which means that not even Jóhannsson’s brilliant score can be nominated. The reason? “[Mandy] was released on VOD before it completed its qualifying [theatrical] run,” ensuring that the film will be completely shut out of the ceremony.

Granted, it’s highly likely that Mandy was never going to be nominated for Best Picture, but Jóhannsson’s score damn sure deserved the recognition. A bummer, to say the least.

You can listen to one of Jóhannsson’s hauntingly beautiful tracks from Mandy below.
