A24’s ‘The Hole in the Ground’ Coming in March 2019

Published

March is going to be a wild month and A24 is getting into the mix with their newly acquired The Hole in the Ground, a film we’ve been tracking here on Bloody for well over a year.

Said to be in the vein of The Babadook, Bloody Disgusting learned that Lee Cronin’s horror film will arrive in limited theaters on March 1, 2019. The release should be similar to that of Bryan Bertino’s The Monster, which means it will also be on DirecTV.

In the film,

“Sarah and her young son Chris move to a new home in the Irish countryside, next to a forest that hides an enormous sinkhole. One night, Chris vanishes, and when he reappears he seems unharmed and unchanged. But, as his behavior grows increasingly disturbing, Sarah begins to fear that the boy who has returned may not be her son at all.

“The Hole in the Ground weaves suspense, terror, and supernatural folklore into a richly evocative story about the primal fears of motherhood.”

Seána Kerslake (A Date For Mad Mary) stars with James Cosmo, Kati Outinen, and James Quinn Markey.

The film will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

Amblin Movie ‘Thursday Murder Club’ Sounds Like ‘Knives Out’ Meets ‘Cocoon’

Chris Columbus (Gremlins – writer, Home Alone – director) is headed back into the director’s chair for Thursday Murder Club, Amblin’s upcoming feature film adaptation of the same-titled novel written by Richard Osman. Variety first reported the news this morning.

It’s not a horror movie, mind you, but rather a star-studded murder-mystery. Think Rian Johnson’s Knives Out… only this particular murder-mystery is set in a retirement community!

Variety details, “The book, released in 2020, tells the story of four septuagenarian friends who live in a retirement community and solve cold cases for fun. When a shady property developer is found dead, the four find themselves in the middle of their first live crime.”

Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley are “being eyed” to lead the cast!

Richard Osman’s 2020 novel was such a hit that it launched a franchise. Follow-up The Man Who Died Twice followed in 2021, with The Bullet That Missed coming along in 2022. And then there was The Last Devil to Die in 2023, with a fifth book in the series expected in 2025.
